It's all about visibility
Roberto Michel 9/1/2006 |

There is a big difference between trying to manage supply chain events in real time and managing by exception. If you're managing by exception, you only need to react to unexpected conditions, rather than sweating the dozens of minor transactions that surround an order as it moves from its point of origin to the customer. Doing both is what sets apart the leaders in the real-time supply chain.

Aircraft Parts Maker Adds Tags to Molds
Beth Bacheldor 6/8/2006 |
|
|
RFID has found its way into industrial ovens used to make components for jet airplanes. Nordam Group, an aerospace company that designs, certifies and manufactures integrated propulsion systems, thrust reversers and other aircraft parts, is using RFID to track high-cost molds, also known as bond tools, at one of its production and warehousing facilities. To create certain aircraft components, Nordam loads the molds with layers of material such as fiberglass broadcloth impregnated with epoxy, phenolic or some other resin. The company then bakes the molds.

While that has made Kirkland's a trendy place to shop, it also created some tough materials handling challenges for the Jackson, Tenn., retailer. It shipped product from three manual warehouses with 650,000 square feet to more than 300 stores in 37 states.

Warehouse management systems, bar code scanning, voice technology and RFID. They are all technologies that enable the collection of information inside the four walls of a warehouse or distribution center.
In today's competitive landscape, however, collecting the information is not enough. The best companies are putting that information to use across their organization in innovative ways, says Chris Heim, president and general manager, HighJump Software (952-947-4088).
"In the past, the information collected as a byproduct of operations wasn't tapped for its inherent value," says Heim. "Today, people are looking for ways to use it both inside and outside their operations to the benefit of the greater supply chain."
